Soldier's Girl

Don't ask, don't tell, don't kill

Nothing is black or white in the film Soldier's Girl, directed by Frank Pierson. There's only a dazzling array of grays. Based on a true story, the film follows Barry (Troy Garity), a soldier who suffers at the hands of his own squad members for having a transgendered girlfriend. The object of Barry's affection is Calpernia (Lee Pace), an early-in-transition transgendered woman. A fellow soldier, Fisher (Shawn Hatosy), menacingly circles the couple. As the relationship between them grows, Fisher becomes more and more of a professional - and personal - threat to Barry, eventually whipping the other soldiers on base into a frenzy with lies and rumors, until events culminate, ironically, on the Fourth of July. The Showtime film was nominated for an Emmy and three Golden Globes and was named one of the ten best television programs of 2003 by the American Film Institute.
