"Tuff Enuff"

Jenny Schlief chops and screws Michael Jackson's Thriller

Buying a family car to chauffeur her two young children around town made Jenny Schlief think about cars on the other end of the practicality scale. "Like the pimped-out, drop-top Houston ride complete with rims," she tells us. Rims became the focus for her new show at the Box 13 Closet Box gallery, "Tuff Enuff." For the exhibit, Schlief mixed drawings and sculptures of car rims with rap music, specifically rap music in the chopped and screwed style of DJ Screw. She transformed a Cadillac rim into an oversize iPod dock, which plays Scriller, a reworked version of the Thrilleralbum by Michael Jackson that Schlief chopped and screwed. Scrillerincludes an album cover with Schlief's face superimposed over Michael Jackson's body for a comical and yet provocative image. "It's come up that Michael Jackson was trying to be white, and me being a white female [posing as Michael Jackson], there's just lots of interesting little things going on there." 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and by appointment. Through February 13. There will be a closing reception "complete with bikinied ladies serving Sizzurp, Drank and Purple Stuff" from 7 to 9:30 p.m. February 13. 6700 Harrisburg. Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. Starts: Jan. 30. Continues through Feb. 13, 2010
