Andres Perekalski and his family moved to Houston a couple of years ago from Florida, and to Florida from Buenos Aires, where Andres's parents owned a deli and coffee shop. His surname is not particularly Argentinean — in fact, the roots of the family are Russian and Polish. They all ended up in Houston after Andres met his wife, who is from Honduras.

The family just opened Argentina Café (3055 Sage, 713-622-8877) in the Galleria area. The place is spotless and has a modern and functional design. Mom and Brother are in the back making everything from scratch, while Dad helps out in the front. "Almost everything we sell is made here," says Andres Perekalski. "People really like our empanadas and our choripan [an Argentinean sausage sandwich]. Our matambre [stuffed beef roll] is a family recipe, and we even make our own alfajores."

The alfajores here are small cookies that are filled with sinful dulce de leche and rolled in coconut flakes — they are absolutely exquisite. Dish also tried the empanadas; compared to what many believe are the best in the city, those at Marine's Empanadas, these are larger and fuller, with a lighter pastry. The sandwiches de miga are traditional white-bread sandwiches with the crust removed. The ham, cheese, olive and red pepper-filled version had us wanting more.
