With Dmitri's Rail and Versecity, 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 5, at House of Blues, 1204 Caroline, 888-402-5837 or www.hob.com/Houston.
Now here's something you don't see every day: a local band headlining House of Blues. In the big room. On a weekend. But head over to the Houston Pavilions Friday night, and that's exactly what you'll find. (We'll pause for just a moment to let that sink in.) On its brief, pretty meteoric rise through the local ranks, the Jud Johnson Band has already accomplished things in a little more than two years that other groups of much older vintage still haven't, like non-public radio play (on Jack FM) and a national TV appearance (on CBS's The Early Show). Granted, the quartet's frisky combination of jazz, rock and groove may not be for everyone — say, people who fill out "music critic" on their tax return — but they have a way with a crowd, and besides, you can't argue with results. The JJB will preview this show, the release party for their 2010 CD, Friday morning on Fox 26's morning news program.
