Maureen McLane has all the credentials any writer could want. She was educated at Harvard, Oxford and the University of Chicago. She's written three books of poetry (This Carrying Life in 2005, Same Life in 2008 and World Enough in 2010). She had articles appear in The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post and Boston Review. But for a writer, it comes down to what she puts on paper. Here's part of her Ode, which appeared on Slate: "I was wild for you and heedless / I am glad love to say this / I was afflicted and afflicted you. / Be careful what you wish for / you warned. I was not careful / nor in the end thank god were you." McLane reads from World Enough today as part of the Rice Cherry Reading Series. 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet.
