Jeremy Justeson has chosen five made-for-the-sax ditties - inspired by Barkley L. Hendricks's portrait exhibition "The Birth of Cool" - to perform at today's Musiqa Loft Concert at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Justeson, who has appeared with the San Antonio, Dallas and Allentown symphonies, will play songs including Barry Cockcroft's "Rock Me!" Musiqa's Robert Smith, who worked with Justeson to create the playlist, says that song "captures the relentless driving energy, rhythms and beats found in many forms of rock music, and references Hendricks's use of pop elements." In addition, Justeson will play one of Smith's own compositions, "schizo 'squito," and another from fellow Musiqa member Marcus Maroney, "Denk Dir," which Smith says is "personal, and treats its material in a extremely focused way, much as the way Hendricks presents people in his infamous portraits."
