He's baaaaaaaaaack! For the second time in less than a year, one of Texas's true legends is set to cast his third eye on the Island. When Roky Erickson and his trio of young musicians — including former Butthole Surfer Kyle Ellison on lead guitar — took the Continental Club stage last June, it was an unexpected pleasure to have them there at all, considering it was the former 13th Floor Elevator's first Houston show in almost a quarter-century. Then they tore the place apart with 75 minutes of music heavier than metal and more powerful than punk, songs flooded with vampires, zombies, beasts and demons that offered a hint at the personal hell Erickson had endured since he last visited. (Trust us, a hint was more than enough.) Now Erickson and his trio return in a redemptive frame of mind, at least judging by the title of his new album True Love Cast Out All Evil (Anti-), a collaboration with Austin indie-folk scholars Okkervil River that grew out of a one-off pairing at the 2008 Austin Music Awards and will be followed by a full-fledged tour later this year. Erickson promised we would miss him, and it sure is nice to have him back so soon.
