More About

When they weren't backing Roky Erickson, the Explosives made their own name as one of Austin's premier power-pop combos in the late '70s and early '80s. La Porte native Freddy "Steady" Krc, Cam King and Waller "Sonny" Collie ran their Texas roots through the Byrds' chiming psychedelia and the brash Brit melodies of the Kinks to arrive at a sound that could hold its own with any punk or New Wave band, and often did at clubs like Austin's Raul's. Unfortunately, Krc's father died around the time the group's first and only LP, Restless Natives (produced by former Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook), was released in 1982 and the Explosives fizzled out. But there are always second chances these days. Krc's label, Steady Boy Records, has just issued Natives — touching on surf, driving R&B and a cover of the Kinks' "I Gotta Move" — on CD for the first time. Sweetening the deal are the band's two 7-inches, "A Girl Like You" and "Push the Button," three live tracks and a bonus DVD partially recorded a mile or so down Main Street from the Continental Club at Houston's long-gone Rock Island club.
