Six groups of hopefuls compete for top honors at the 19th Annual Mariachi Invitational, part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Among them will be Las Damas de Jalisco, an all-female group from San Antonio that took home first place last year. The top two groups of the competition go on to perform at the Mariachi finals on HLSR's Go Tejano Day, sharing the stage with headliners Pesado and El Trono de Mexico. "Our competition is one of the oldest, largest and richest mariachi competitions in the United States," Mike Martinez, chairman of the 2008 Go Tejano Day, said last year. "People who win this have major bragging rights." 6:30 p.m. Verizon Wireless Theater, 520 Texas. For information, call 713-230-1600 or visit www.hlsr.com. $22.50 to $32.50.
