When Geoff Winningham published Rites of Fall, a 1978 collection of photographs documenting high school football in Texas, he established himself as one of the foremost chroniclers of our state's idiosyncratic culture. Now, Winningham Ñ whose other collections include Friday Night in the Coliseum and Going Texan Ñ is a professor at Rice University, and has shifted his focus slightly. His new book Traveling the Shore of the Spanish Sea: The Gulf Coast of Texas and Mexico is the culmination of seven years of travel and research, during which Winningham took hundreds of trips between the southern coast of Veracruz all the way up to the Texas coast near High Island. The result is part historical narrative and part travelogue, but the centerpiece is the 200-plus photos of the people, animals and landscapes Winningham encountered; he'll discuss and sign the book at 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet.
