Stirred & Shaken: Rocbar's Stephanie's Panties

The full blame/credit for the name of this week's cocktail goes to Stephanie, one of the sparingly dressed rock-and-roll-themed female bartenders at RöcBar (530 Texas, 713-236-1100). She calls her signature drink Stephanie's Panties, because, as she put it, "It's not the best thing in the world, but it's close to it." (She must have a really cool tattoo on her hip.) At least the name was appropriate — the Pretty Things touring burlesque show was at RöcBar that night. A friend and I wandered around while we waited for the entertainment to start. There's a loungey feel to the place, with its soft light and low-rise leather couches arranged in elevated cubicles. But there are also fake skulls dangling over the pool tables and an Exile on Main St. poster in the bathroom. (Points for the latter.) I wouldn't say RöcBar is the best of any world, but the Lone Star was cheap that night and the room was large enough to accommodate the burlesque show, which ended up even better than expected. The ladies of Pretty Things were lovely, the elaborate costumes were handmade and emcee Donny Vomit had a substantial stock of dangerous parlor tricks and questionable jokes. Still, the best laugh of the night came from an overheard conversation between two guys at the bar. "I don't really follow the plot of this," a bored young man with a faux-hawk said. His friend replied, "But I thought you liked titty bars." It was nearly enough to send me back for another pair.

3/4 ounce Three Olives grape vodka

3/4 ounce Three Olives cherry vodka

Splash pineapple juice

Splash cranberry juice

Splash sweet and sour

Dash grenadine

Combine ingredients over ice in a highball glass. This can also be shaken over ice and poured as shots. Try going heavy on the vodka — otherwise you may end up with panties that taste like SweeTarts.
