Randy Wayne White: Deep Shadow

Doc Ford and associates are up against a couple of bad guys - again

Doc Ford and his two friends, boat bum Tomlinson and Native American teen Will Chaser, have a plan in Randy Wayne White's novel Deep Shadow: They're going to find a downed cargo plane loaded with the art and money Batista looted from Cuban museums and the treasury just before his fall to Castro. Everyone has always assumed the plane went down in the Gulf, but Tomlinson has a theory that it might have crashed in one of Florida's networks of lakes, rivers and swamps.

What should be an exciting - and profitable - underwater adventure turns into one of the most dangerous situations Doc has ever encountered. Two ex-cons are on a killing spree and when they come upon Doc and his friends, they figure they'll take whatever treasure the divers find and then let alligators consume the corpses. Little do they know, alligators are nowhere near the scariest creatures in the water.

Deep Shadow is White's 17th outing with Doc Ford, a character he says continues to surprise and intrigue him. "When I started writing, I knew I wanted a character that I could stay with for a long time, someone I wouldn't get tired of," he says. White reads and discusses Deep Shadow today at 6:30 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-524-8597 or visit www.murderbooks.com. Free.
