Odds are, there isn't going to be a happy ending for everyone in Queen of Spades, an opera by Tchaikovsky. The action follows Herman, a commoner in love with Liza, a high-society girl who's about to marry a prince. Liza's grandmother is known as the Queen of Spades because of her luck at the gambling tables in her youth. There's a widely circulated rumor that she knows the secret to winning. Herman decides he'll pry the secret out of the old lady and use it to win a fortune and, he hopes, Liza's heart.
Moscow native Maria Markina, currently with the Houston Grand Opera Studio, will perform as Liza, while her countryman Vasily Ladyuk, whose resume includes stints with the Bolshoi Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera and time on stage at La Scala, will sing Herman. Spend some time meeting the soloists during a post-performance reception. 7:30 p.m. RCC Our Texas, 2337 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-395-3301 or visit www.ourtx.com. $8 to $10.
