Roque Montalvo is about as unlucky as he can get in David Corbett's new novel Do They Know I'm Running? The 18-year-old has lost both his parents and is living in California with an aunt who cares for his brother, an ex-Marine who was seriously injured in Iraq. When his uncle is deported, it falls to Roque to maneuver the treacherous smuggling routes from El Salvador to Guatemala, then Mexico to the U.S., to bring his uncle back. With ruthless gangs, emboldened thieves and corrupt police officials lining the way, that would seem daunting enough. But soon after he begins the journey, he realizes he doesn't have all the facts. Along with his uncle, Roque is expected to smuggle a beautiful young woman (there's a Mexican crime lord expecting her) into the U.S., along with a mysterious Arab who isn't too good about giving out specifics - like what he's planning to do once he gets to America. 4 p.m. Murder by the Book, 2342 Bissonnet.
