Katherine Center: Get Lucky

The Houston-based writer uses boobs, sisters and stretch marks to tell a story

Beautifully blond and wonderfully Texan, Katherine Center has published three novels in less than a decade, and each has been connected to Houston in some way. Her latest, Get Lucky, is about Sarah, a girl who returns to Houston after doing a very public crash-and-burn in New York City. Once she arrives here, she realizes how insignificant her job woes are in comparison to her sister's situation. Brokenhearted after years of trying to get pregnant and failing, she's given up on her dream of having a baby. "Sarah offers to become a surrogate for her sister," says Valerie Koehler, owner of Blue Willow Bookshop, where Center will appear for a reading and signing session.

Center's prose is charming and funny. "Mackie and Clive envisioned my pregnancy like a long stay at a family-owned spa," she writes. "They were going to cook for me and pamper me and spritz me with gratitude every day...They were getting a baby, and I was getting a 40-week, all-expense-paid, health-and-wellness-oriented, baby-riffic vacation." Ah, if only it were that simple. Pretty soon Sarah finds her sister growing distant, while Sarah and her brother-in-law find themselves having a baby. 7 p.m. 14532 Memorial Drive.
