Shakespeare in the Park

Happy birthday, Bard of Avon

To celebrate the birthday of the world's greatest playwright (the only sure date we know is his baptismal day, April 26, 1564), the University of Houston School of Theatre and Dance stages two of his masterpieces in their outdoor program Shakespeare in the Park. The original battle of the sexes, Taming of the Shrew, is a slam-bang physical comedy with feisty Kate and piggish Petruchio fighting and loving all over old Padua. The original clash of the titans occurs in the majestic Henry V, as young king Henry unites all of England in his epic conquest of France. Michelle Robinson, a member of the School of Theatre and Dance, explains, "The shows we pick are for our MFA program...We think about how we're going to put students in these shows. It's a bonus to perform at Discovery Green; it's like the gravy." See Shrewat 7 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday, 7 p.m. Sunday, and see Henry V at 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. 1500 McKinney.
