"Flickerlounge: Short Works by Dara Greenwald"

Video artist exposes her left wing with found and staged works

"Flickerlounge: Short Works by Dara Greenwald" exposes the media artist's political side. (Not that she was trying to hide it.) The short-filmmaker/activist's pieces include found videos that inspire protest. Take Strategic Cyber Defense - a mash-up of footage from a government security training video. American guards encounter foreigners who, regardless of ethnicity, "are represented as speaking the same language but it's like a gibberish language," explains Greenwald. "The rest of the world is a made-up place with a made-up language." Other videos feature Greenwald's feminist dance troupe, which addresses causes such as violence against women and the war in Iraq through popular music, fashion and dance moves. "We would create dance spectacles that people could join in or watch," she says. "Then after...we'd give out flyers about what the issues were we were protesting." Noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Through June 5. DiverseWorks, 1117 East Freeway. For information, call 713-335-3445 or visit www.diverseworks.org. Free.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: April 30. Continues through June 5, 2010
