These days writing a memoir is sticky business. Just ask James Frey, Herman Rosenblat or Margaret Seltzer - all of whom got caught passing off fiction as fact. Jake Silverstein, editor of Texas Monthly and writer of Nothing Happened and Then It Did, straddles the murky waters between the truth and the tale by calling his debut book A Chronicle in Fact and Fiction. The picaresque work moves between memoir and short story as it follows a frustrated journalist who travels from a job at a small West Texas newspaper through various adventures before he ends up in New Orleans, eventually moving on from there. Along the journey he meets a host of oddballs including a treasure hunter who makes him swear he'll never publish a word about the hunt, and an ex-Nazi in charge of an old-fashioned Mexican road race. Some of this is fiction, and some is based on events from Silverstein's real-life journalistic career. Meet Silverstein today to discuss the difference when he reads from Nothing Happened and Then It Did at 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet.
