Let's hope Saturday is a marvelous night for a moondance, because it's Van Morrison's first Houston-area performance since 1978. No doubt the only musician described as a "poet-sorcerer" by the All Music Guide, the Belfast-born Morrison has been a towering figure in Western pop since his band Them came around at just about midnight with 1964's "Gloria." That song alone (released as a B-side!) might have been enough to secure Morrison's place in the rock and roll pantheon — it's been covered by Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, The Doors, AC/DC, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Texas's own 13th Floor Elevators — but then Morrison released a string of albums in the late '60s and early '70s that set him apart from pretty much any other singer-songwriter on Earth: Astral Weeks (which Bono describes as "legal drugs" in the Out of Ireland documentary), Moondance, His Band and the Street Choir, Tupelo Honey and Saint Dominic's Preview. The curmudgeonly soul shaman is said to be devoting most of his sets to more recent material, as in countryish Lost Highway LPs Pay the Devil (2006) and Keep It Simple (2008), and going on precisely at the listed start time (8 p.m. here), so don't be late.
