It's surprising that, after 30 years of incendiary shows, The Blasters haven't gone to heaven in a glorious blaze of self-combustion. Since bursting onto the Los Angeles scene in 1979 with their classic American Music, the band has been a long-lived cult favorite if never a huge mainstream success. Although primary songwriter Dave Alvin left in 1986 for a solo career, The Blasters have soldiered on under brother Phil Alvin's leadership, and continue to delight their almost religiously rabid fans by sticking to the basics: blues, rockabilly and old-school rock and roll. Every set explodes with the energy of a bar fight as the band tromps through classic songs like "Long White Cadillac," "One Red Rose" and their Holy Trinity of "American Music," "Border Radio" and "Marie, Marie." The last time we saw Phil Alvin, it was a cold winter night and he was sitting on the curb by his van, soaked in sweat and physically drained from a performance at the Fabulous Satellite Lounge. Don't expect anything less on this long-overdue return by one of America's finest and hardest-working roots bands. "One Bad Stud" indeed.
