Case No. 105

Midnight Theatre opens its doors with a rewrite of The Raven

The Midnight Theatre Company did not get its name by accident. According to company member Vanessa Hernandez, founder Jimmy Mai was driving around one day when the idea to start a theater company hit him. "He decided to call it the Midnight Theatre Company because we plan to have some midnight showings," says Hernandez. Cool idea, but it will have to wait. The group's opening night on the boards has a traditional 8 p.m. curtain time. This first offering, called Case No. 105, is based on Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. "It takes place in an insane asylum," says Hernandez, who is also the costumer. "It's a one-man show. The character's trying to deal with the loss of his wife, and he's also been accused of the murder of his best friend. He's trying to prove to everyone that he's not crazy, that the raven really did speak to him." Sounds like an interesting beginning for the new company. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday. Midtown Arts Center, 3414 LaBranch. For information, call 832-441-0697. $ 10 to $12.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: May 14. Continues through May 16, 2010
