As the name implies, Austin's Jungle Rockers are way into the primitive. Theirs is music for Tarzan's effort to woo Jane — if Bo Diddley played Tarzan, or if Tarzan played electric guitar. The band's recently released EP may be titled Cool It Out, but cooling it out doesn't seem to be what this brazen four-piece specializes in, not with the throwback Link Wray and Bo Diddley garage-rock overtones and pounding tribal drum rhythms that pop up on virtually every song. But these guys are not exactly one-trick ponies, as the track "Lies" proves with a layered Buddy Holly-esque vibe that works perfectly over the nasty Diddley beat. With precise musicianship and an ear for the best garage licks, it's no wonder this young band has been opening shows for the likes of Southern Culture on the Skids and Dave Alvin's Knitters project.
