The Hickoids have now been a pain in Austin's smug, image-conscious ass for 25 years, and show no signs of mellowing with age. Half Jason and the Scorchers cowpunks, half deranged Monty Python satirists and 100 percent don't give a fuck, Jeff Smith and Davy Jones continue to sally forth with punk energy and a bottomless bag of musical tricks and insults. Ironically, Jones is being cast as the TV "face" of this year's Austin City Limits festival. Obviously the promoters have no memory of the Hickoids screaming "Willie Nelson must die" from the stage of the Austin Music Awards as they accepted their Best Country Act award in 1985. Nor probably have they heard the whispers that the band is about to record "our British rock/glam 'tribute' album, Kicking It with the Twits." The Hickoids will continue what Smith calls "our interstate sword fight" with Louisiana psychos Dash Rip Rock in this double bill that should prove that Houston is just as weird as Austin wishes it still was.
