"John Alexander: Life on a Merry-Go-Round"

There's only one painting in Beaumont-born artist John Alexander's show "Life on a Merry-Go-Round," currently at McClain Gallery, but it's a doozy. The name of both the exhibit and the piece, Life on a Merry-Go-Roundis an oil painting of a bunch of grim-faced, wacky-masked people riding a carousel decorated with demon heads, cow skulls and the faces of scary-looking clowns oh, and a few owls and monkeys. Layered with a sense of dread, Life on a Merry-Go-Round looks like what Hieronymus Bosch would have painted if he'd ever visited a Barnum & Bailey production.
