It's style versus substance in Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains. The 1982 pseudo-documentary was almost lost when Paramount pulled the film after critics and audiences alike panned early previews. It never even made it to VHS. But a few of the people who saw it kept the buzz up and saved The Fabulous Stains from oblivion. Diane Lane, Laura Dern and Marin Kanter play The Stains, a girl band that goes on tour with the more experienced The Looters. The media and public pick up on the novelty of The Stains, ignoring the more musically talented Looters, which causes some friction between the two groups. Director Lou Adler and screenwriter Nancy Dowd do a good job of keeping the film's message - that is, that audiences will usually take something new and shiny over something solid and well done - in the forefront without pounding viewers over the head with it. 8:30 p.m. Domy Books, 1709 Westheimer.
