The young actor Q'orianka Kilcher turns in a subtle, sensitive performance as Princess Kaiulani. A member of the Hawaiian royal family during the monarchy's last days in 1888, the 17-year-old princess is sent to England when civil war breaks out. Overcoming culture shock (the British consider her more a novelty than a princess), Kaiulani falls in love with an Englishman. But her joy is short-lived; news reaches her that her aunt, Queen Lili'uokalani has been overthrown and is under arrest. Torn between pursuing her own happiness and fulfilling her responsibility to her people, Princess Kaiulani must make the choice of a lifetime.
