The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

Enjoy "I Will Always Love You" on key and sans squeaks

There are two reasons you should attend today's screening of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. First, it's based on a colorful bit of Texas history. In the mid-1970s, news reporter Marvin Zindler uncovered the worst-kept secret in Texas, the Chicken Ranch, a brothel operating just outside La Grange, and promptly launched a crusade to close the place down. In the film, Dolly Parton is the madam, Miss Mona, Dom DeLuise is over-the-top Melvin (a takeoff on Zindler) and Burt Reynolds is the sheriff who has a soft spot for Miss Mona.

The second reason to see The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is that you'll hear Dolly Parton hit all the high notes in the song "I Will Always Love You," the ones Whitney Houston has been missing in her recent concerts (we use the word "concerts" loosely here). Parton penned the tune and she delivers a heartfelt - and on key! - performance in the film. 7:30 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse/West Oaks, 1000 West Oaks Mall. For information, call 281-920-9211 or visit www.drafthouse.com/westoaks. $7.
