Candida

The Red Door Theatre Company stages Shaw's nonsecular romance

George Bernard Shaw's Candidais a pre-Christina Aguilera exploration of "what a girl wants / what a girl needs." The story follows Candida, a poet in 1800s London wedded to a prominent clergyman, who owes much of his success to his wife's talent with words. Their life is disrupted when she goes away for a vacation, where she catches the eye (and ear) of another poet, Eugene Marchbanks, who vows to free her from the monotony of domesticity. But is that what Candida wants? Her hubby sure doesn't think so. The Reverend fights to keep his muse/housekeeper, as the youthful Marchbanks woos her. See who gets the last word at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3:30 p.m. Sundays. Through June 27. Red Door Theatre Company, 4513 Red Bluff Road. For information, call 281-542-0500 or visit www.thereddoortheatrecompany.com. $10 to $15.
