More About

Juneteenth always means a one-of-a-kind blues show at Miller Outdoor Theatre, with a lineup this year that nods heavily toward Louisiana. The Meters Experience, an all-star project headed by Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli, celebrates the music of the Meters, one of the most storied — and litigious — ensembles in the history of Crescent City music. Since forming the ensemble for some one-off shows in 2009, Nocentelli's Experience has somewhat ironically become an in-demand act on the jam-band circuit. Short of a Meters reunion, which seems unlikely, this is probably as close as those of us who grew up on Meters' albums like Struttin', Rejuvenation and the classic Fire On the Bayou will get to seeing New Orleans's most celebrated funk band in this lifetime. Also on the bill are the Soul Rebels Brass Band and stellar zydeco stompers Nathan & the Zydeco Cha-Chas, making this Juneteenth a south Louisiana musical smorgasbord, perfect for picnicking on the hill and lying back in the deep grooves emanating from the stage.
