"Neopopstreetfunk II"

Group exhibit features Houston's underground up-and-comers

"Neopopstreetfunk II"surveys sprouting underground artists, again. The group exhibit - now enjoying its second year - showcases Houstonians (and a couple of out-of-towners) known for their unique, urban styles. "They're not landscape painters, you know?" says organizer Nicky Davis, who adds that the artists are influenced by one or more of the styles expressed in the title. Among others, this includes Davis himself, as well as Florida painter/collage artist Bask; Houston's wheat-paste poster artist The Give Up Guy; local collage artist Matt Messinger; and Robert Hodge, recently seen at Lawndale Art Center. "Hodge [is] amazing. He does the silk screening and the painting and the pop art - he does everything," says Davis. There's an opening reception 7 to 11 p.m. on June 26. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. Through July 10. Gallery M Squared, 339 West 19th Street. For information, call 713-861-6070 or visit www.gallerymsquared.com. Free.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: May 27. Continues through July 10, 2010
