Amid the incessant political bickering and general national strife, you might not be feeling too patriotic these days. But for most of us all it takes to stir up that deep-seated loyalty is some rousing Tchaikovsky. All right, so his 1812 Overture was written to commemorate Russia's defeat of Napoleon, but by now it's such a staple at Independence Day concerts that we're allowed to pretend it's our own (plus, there will be cannons!). The classic is but one of the features of the Houston Symphony's Star-Spangled Salute, which unites conductor Michael Krajewski and his bevy of musicians with the Texas Tenors for renditions of (otherwise) all-American classics including the "Star-Spangled Banner," "Shenandoah," "My Country," and "God Bless the U.S.A." Oh, and "Deep in the Heart of Texas" (Okay, okay, so “Deep in the Heart of Texas isn’t exactly a 4th of July song – but it’s a holiday, lighten up.) 8 p.m. Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, 2005 Lake Robbins Drive, Spring. For information, call 281-364-3024 or visit www.woodlandscenter.org. Free.
Sun., July 4, 8 p.m., 2010
