The Glass Menagerie

The Landing Theatre Company is starting at the top

David Rainey has big ideas for the Landing Theatre Company, the brand-new professional theater company housed at the University of Houston-Downtown. Rainey, a company member of the Alley Theatre, is artistic director of the enterprise. "Our goal is to eventually offer a full season during the summer, like Williamstown," he tells us, referring to the Tony Award-winning summer stock theater festival. For now, the company is starting with one show - Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie, thought by many to be one of the most beautifully written plays in the American canon. The famous "memory play," as Williams himself called it, is about the tender failings of the Wingfield family, a down-on-their-luck trio of dreamers whose lives are forever changed one gauzy evening when a gentleman comes to call on the painfully shy sister.

Rainey says the play is one of his favorites. "We're trying to do a production that is true to Williams's desires. We've got a great set design and a great cast. It's quite a good production." We can't think of a better way to start a theater company. See The Glass Menagerie at 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 4 p.m. Sundays. Through July 11. O’Kane Theatre, 1 Main. For information, call 713-487-5634 or visit www.landingtheatre.org. $5 to $12.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: July 2. Continues through July 11, 2010
