Korma Sutra

Simran Patel is owner and executive chef of Korma Sutra (706 Main, 713-229-8200). "It's obviously a play on words," she explains. "The Kama Sutra is known as the Art of Making Love, and our tag line is, 'Have a passionate love affair with fine Indian cuisine.' Korma is an Indian curry with ingredients like cashews, almonds and cream — you know, the food of kings."

Patel, who runs Korma Sutra with her husband, graduated from the culinary program at HCC and is pursuing a master's degree from the University of Houston. In addition to Indian food, which she cooks every day, she's also passionate about French and Italian cuisines. "I was raised in England, where you have some of the best Indian food in the world," says her husband Neil. "The other Indian restaurants in Houston are all missing something and that is authenticity and true Indian flavors," he says. "Forget fusion. We're catering to people who don't mind spice."

At a lunchtime visit, the fish curry wasn't available, but Simran quickly approached the table and offered an off-the-menu salmon tikka to start. This eye-opening appetizer, made by rubbing dry Indian spices on two chunks of salmon before grilling them, quickly made us pay attention. It was followed by a shrimp curry served with beautifully decorated basmati rice.

While the food was good, the service was anything but. When we came in we stood at the door waiting for a good minute with restaraunt employees standing behind the bar looking at us as if we they weren't sure that we wanted assistance. Then, after letting them know that we did have reservations, they set us at a small table closest to the door. On a normal night in Houston this would have been fine, but this happened to be a rare windy and cold night in Houston. Every time someone came in or out of the restaraunt we were blasted by a gust of cold wind. We should have requested a different table, but we felt that we could endure. (We did notice another couple seemed to request a different table and were moved further to the back.) The Hispanic busboy served us promptly with water and the free paapads and cutney (as mentioned by others), but after at least 4-5 minutes of looking over the menu, deciding what we wanted and waiting for someone to acknowledge us, we finally got one of the waitresses attention. She came to ask if we needed anything. We told her we were ready to order and, without any apology, she came back to the table and took our order. We ordered a bottle of wine which came to the table pre-corked with the cork floating in the bottle!! The waitress said nothing about this (although she must have known it was in there) and we didn't see her again until requesting the check after our meal. While I don't like waiters huvering over you during a meal, it is nice to be "waited" on to order the meal and ensure that everything is satisfactory before enjoying the meal. The entrees came with no rice (very unusual for Indian food). When we asked the waitress if it did, she simply said no, not offering us any at an additional price. After going back to look at the menu, we could have added rice, vegetables, and levened bread for an additional $8! Although, we should have read that, all I saw was rice and assumed it came with it. As what I can imagine might be a common mistake, it would have been nice for the waitress to mentione that so that we wouldn't have expected it and not received anything. We were aware that we weren't the only ones with a problem with the service with the couple beside us went up to the waitstaff and what we presume to be the owner and a few minutes later were delivered their food in to-go containers with a profuse apology from the owner and a request to pay for their meal. They accepted and went on their way. It was at that point that we decided we should just go and not expect any better service. After first receiving the wrong check, then getting the check without our coupon discounted from the total and seeing that the 18% gratuity was already added on, we signed the check, left no additional tip and went on our way without anymore acknowledgement from the waitstaff or owner. If we could have given an extra tip to the Hispanic busboys who promptly and graciously refilled our drinks and brought our food, that would have been nice. As others have mentioned, the food was ok, but not for the prices or poor service. We'll stick with our usual, Shiva in Rice Village, for our next Indian fix!

I MUST try their food!! Love the play on words, lol, but what especially caught my eye is that Simran Patel was raised in England. I lived there briefly & have visited several times and that's where I've eaten the best without doubt!! Another find to add to my list, but it certainly won't go on the bottom of the list by any means. Thanks, Paul
