The premise of the Back Porch Players’ newest production, Jewtopia, the outrageously successful comedy about all things Jewish, is simple enough. Chris O’Connell, a Gentile, spends the play trying to learn how to be more Jewish-like in order to win back his Jewish girlfriend who dumped him after college. He thinks marrying a Jewish girl will make life easy — that he’ll never have to make a decision about his life again — Oy vey! When Chris runs into his buddy Adam Lipschitz, a guy who’s spent so much time dating outside his faith he hasn’t the foggiest notion of how to charm the sort of nice Jewish girl his mother wants him to marry, the two team up to help each other out. These supposed cultural lessons are full of stereotypes, but that’s what we expect from a play that’s really sketch comedy at its silliest — and most successful. The show has fans across the country, from New York to Los Angeles, where it has played to happy, guffawing audiences. 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Through August 1. Stages Repertory Theatre, 3201 Allen Parkway. For information, call 713-527-0123 or visit www.thebackporchplayers.com. $25 to $30.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 14. Continues through Aug. 1, 2010
