One of the many strengths of the Houston gallery scene is its attention to Texas-based artists — but that doesn’t mean the whole town is filled with pictures of tumbleweeds and cowboys. Case in point: “Lonesome Travelers”at Art League Houston exhibits the work of three Texas photographers — Mario Perez, Bryan Shutmaat and Robert Ziebell — but emphasizes their shared passion for travel. Curator Beth Secor says that in selecting the images, she was “drawn to their narrative quality” — so much so that she named the exhibition after a Kerouac novel. Shutmaat’s soft, placid images depict the quiet towns of heartland America; Ziebell’s vibrant photos document community life south of the border; and Perez’s contemplative scenes reveal his 20-year experience as a painter. All photograph seemingly “normal” objects and people — reminding us that discovering other people’s “normal” is one of the fundamental pleasures of travel. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
