The Marvelous Wonderettes

Something sweet for summer

Tired of sweeping operas, tense psychodramas and rock extravaganzas? Try the saccharine songstresses who star in The Marvelous Wonderettes. The ultra-light musical romp, presented by Stages Repertory Theatre, is set at the 1958 prom of Springfield High, where Missy, Suzy, Cindy Lou and Betty Jean - decked out in Mad Men-worthy crinoline skirts and significant hairdos - use songs such as "Lollipop," "Stupid Cupid" and "Mr. Lee" to convey their various conquests and crushes. In the second act, the girls perform at their ten-year reunion, and this time, with pregnancy and marital strife on the menu, they offer up "It's in His Kiss," "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Respect." The show won't win for Best Original anything, but it is easy on the mind. 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Through August 29. Stages Repertory Theatre, 3201 Allen Parkway. For information, call 713-527-0123 or visit www.stagestheatre.com. $19 to $35.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 14. Continues through Aug. 29, 2010
