In 2009, the author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni launched a blog and wrote, “I think amazement is a wonderful quality, one worth cultivating…Some of us lost it along the way. But we can regain it if we pay attention.” Just over a year later, she has published the novel One Amazing Thing, which sprang from the same mindset. The story is actually a testament to the power of stories: When a small group of people become trapped following an earthquake, they keep their spirits up and optimism intact by telling one another about amazing things that have happened to them. Divakaruni, who teaches writing at the University of Houston and has written more than a dozen books, will discuss and sign One Amazing Thing today at the Houston Public Library. 2 p.m. 500 McKinney.
