It takes just one read of Liars’ Club, Mary Karr’s first memoir, to recognize that she does not harbor exactly fond memories of her Southeast Texas upbringing. Liars’ Club detailed her tumultuous upbringing near Port Arthur, while her second book, Cherry, recounted her troubled adolescence. In her latest memoir, the widely acclaimed Lit, she tells of her descent into alcoholism and the conversion to Catholicism that, she says, saved her.
