Bend It Like Beckham

Reignite your soccer passion with 2002's scoring dramedy

Perhaps hoping to take advantage of Houston's recent love affair with the World Cup, Mix 96.5 FM's Sports Center is presenting a free screening of director Gurinder Chadha's 2002 hit dramedy Bend It Like Beckhamat downtown's Discovery Green. The movie features Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley as young female soccer players who share a crush on their coach (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Jess (Nagra) is saddled with the added challenge of a strict Indian family who forbid her to indulge her infatuation with football. Ultimately, the "Bend It" of the title is not only about the ability to bypass a line of defenders with a spectacular, curling, goal-scoring kick; it's also about bending societal rules and norms, and challenging traditional notions and expectations. (It's not really about soccer.) 8:30 p.m. Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney. For information, call 713-400-7336 or visit www.discoverygreen.com. Free.
