"If Only We Knew Now What They Knew Then"

For their double show, "If We Only Knew Now What They Knew Then,"artists Katy Heinlein and Melanie Crader have kept it simple and open to interpretation. "Melanie and I have some similarities formally," says Heinlein. "We're both really interested in color and a neo-minimal aesthetic. And we're both interested in nostalgia. We kept talking about how things used to be done, and the wisdom of the Amish. We like the title because it doesn't tell you everything." Crader's Take Away Project, a series of printed stories, is about the ways stories change from teller to listener, while Heinlein's wall-mounted wood-and-fabric sculptures explore ceremony and contrast. "I'm using a lot of fringe and stripes," she says. "One is based on a mourning flag - which is purple and black - with hot-pink fringe. I was thinking about how you might be in a horrible state of mind, and your neighbor is having a quincea–era next door. The contrasts in life." Opening reception: 5:30 p.m. July 29. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Through September 9. Space 125 Gallery, 3201 Allen Parkway.
