There might be only one man in history responsible for hundreds of American deaths who later went on to socialize with an American president. Most likely, that man was Quanah Parker, the Comanche warrior at the heart of S.C. Gwynne's history Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History. In the book, Gwynne (a contributing editor at Texas Monthly and a former reporter and editor at Time) revisits the frontiers of West Texas, where for 300 years the Comanches resisted all comers, from the Spanish colonialists to the Texas Rangers. At the tale's heart is Parker, a half-white warrior who led his people in battle at age 21 and later became an influential rancher. Gwynne will discuss and sign copies of his book, which both celebrates and mourns a once-proud way of life. 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore. 2421 Bissonnet.
