Music fans might not think of Houston as a jazz town – local monsters like Woody Witt, Denis Dotson and others notwithstanding — but every August all that changes at the Houston International Jazz Festival. This year's weekend-long celebration kicks off Friday with a preview by Theresa Grason at Red Cat Jazz Café (make reservations at www.redcatjazzcafe.com) before the music moves on to Discovery Green and groundbreaking Saturday headliners Hiroshima. Together for more than 30 years, the fusion band is best known for combining Japanese and world music into something accessible for the masses; in other words, you don't have to be an expert in obscure rhythms to understand their sound. The group's latest release, Legacy, garnered a 2010 Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Album. Supporting Hiroshima Saturday are Rachelle Ferrell and the Texas Brass Band with Kyle Turner. On Sunday it's Tito Puente Jr., son of the late percussion legend, who will share the stage with M.F. Productions' Latin Jazz All-Stars.
