Animal skins, bootmaking tools and custom-made shoe wear are on display at the HCC-Northline campus exhibit “Al Puro Tiro: Bootmakers and Bootmaking in Houston, Tejas.”Sponsored in part by the Art Education Foundation of Francisco Cantú Medel, the exhibit showcases the artistry of Houston-based Mexican bootmakers. The Spanish equivalent of the perfect fit, the term al puro tiro refers to the exact instep patterns needed for haute bootmaking. Among the featured zapateros, or “shoemakers,” is the recently deceased José “Pepe” Gonzalez, who made custom boots for presidents Eisenhower, Reagan and Bush Sr. The exhibit is available for viewing by appointment only. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
