Houston Ballet:: Three for the Ages

This HB program features some of the best dance of the last 75 years

George Balanchine, Igor Stravinsky, Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Houston’s own Stanton Welch and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — that’s a remarkable line-up of talents (we would say geniuses, but we don’t like to gush). The repertory program Three for the Ages draws on choreography and music by these giants as well as the impressive abilities of the dancers of the Houston Ballet. Balanchine’s Apollo, created in 1928 and long considered a landmark piece in contemporary ballet, chronicles the story of the Greek god of music, poetry and prophecy and the muses who educate him. Then it’s Robbins’s Fancy Free, with music by Bernstein. Created in 1944, the piece shows three sailors on leave and looking for a little excitement in New York City. Finally, it’s Falling, choreographed by Stanton Welch in 2005 and set to Mozart’s Salzburg Symphonies. The lighthearted work features five couples, each performing a lively pas de deux. 8 p.m. Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, 2005 Lake Robbins Drive. For information, call 281-363-3300 or visit www.houstonballet.org. Free to $15.
Fri., Aug. 20, 8 p.m., 2010
