17th Annual Theater District Open House

Here comes the 2010-2011 arts season - get your sneak peek here

Kicking off the 2010-2011 performing arts season is the 17th Annual Theater District Open House. The family event offers a behind-the-scenes view into every major venue in the district. At the Alley Theatre, kids and grownups can spend the day in the land of make-believe, trying on costumes and learning fight moves from Houston's own stage combat master, Brian Byrnes. The theater will also host a root-beer tasting booth from St. Arnold Brewing Co. and interactive games. When you're done with the Alley, cross the street to Jones Hall, where kids can put their hands on a tuba at the Instrument Petting Zoo and everyone can enjoy a free concert from the Houston Symphony. Performances, tours, mini-concerts and interactive experiences are all on the schedule at each site.

Each organization in the district will have details about its upcoming season, including Hairsprayby Theatre Under the Stars, Billy Elliot the Musical by the Gexa Energy Broadway Series (the new name for Broadway Across America) and Joshua Bell's Mendelssohn concert with the Houston Symphony. And for all of you planning on purchasing season tickets, most organizations are offering special prices during the Open House. Noon through 4 p.m. Downtown Theater District, Texas Avenue at Louisiana. For information, call 713-658-8938 or visit www.downtownhouston.org. Free.
Sun., Aug. 29, 12-4 p.m., 2010
