Mat Johnsonand Simon Gane's graphic novel Dark Raintells the story of a stormy sting. "Some ex-cons in Houston get the brilliant idea to go into New Orleans during the Hurricane Katrina evacuation and rob a bank," he says. UH creative writing professor Johnson wrote the book, which depicts the events that took place after the levees broke, with British illustrator Gane. "We met in New Orleans and spent a couple of days there," Johnson says. Along with news photos, Gane's original art presents a pretty accurate picture of how New Orleans looked after Katrina. Dark Rainwill be released in August (by DC Comic sister publisher Vertigo), but Johnson will offer a sneak peak tonight when he reads for the Poison Pen Reading Series while the graphic novel's panels are projected. Miah Arnold and Eric Anthamatten also read during today's presentation. 8:30 p.m. Poison Girl, 1641 Westheimer. For information, call 713-527-9929 or visit www.poisonpenreadingseries.com. Free.
