Sara Paretsky: Body Work

The author of the V.I. Warshawski series gives readers another thriller

Novelist Sara Paretskystarts off her latest novel Body Workwith investigator V.I. Warshawski finding a dying woman in the parking lot of a nightclub. As she holds the woman, Warshawski can't help but wonder, "Who was she? And more importantly, who wanted her dead?" Paretsky's biting writing makes the reader wonder, too. And although there's a multitude of complicated characters surrounding the mystery, the novel's quick pace and driving action keep readers eagerly turning the page.

Homophobia is a central issue in Body Work it's the reason one character supposedly distanced herself from her family. Paretsky says she's unafraid that changing attitudes toward gays and lesbians might affect the way future readers see the storyline. "There are still substantial sections of American society that find homosexuality deeply troubling. When you consider the billions of dollars that religious groups put into fighting against civil rights for the GLBT communities, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to imagine the conflict a child in one of those religious families might feel as she realizes...her sexuality," Paretsky tells us.
