Ed Pierson recently retired. For about a month. Then, he says, "I had finished every project there was around the house and I was going crazy." So he decided to open Pierson's Cajun & Country Café (3843 Cartwright Rd., Missouri City, 281-208-8882).

Since Pierson is originally from Opelousas, Louisiana, it should come as little surprise that he opened a Cajun restaurant that also does some pretty mean barbecue. He and his entire family can be found at this local neighborhood place each and every day. His son runs the barbecue pit, which was there when they moved in.
The barbecue Dish tried was smoky and juicy, with the telltale signs of a good, long, slow cook. The blackened catfish also was expertly prepared. The gumbo contained chicken, sausage and shrimp, and lots of it. Pierson is not shy with his portions — the crawfish etouffée had plenty of crawfish in it. Ed's sister makes the cakes and pies, and the cream cheese sweet potato pie was more than two people could finish.
As good as everything we tried was, breakfast stole the show. For $3.99, we had a platter with three eggs, sausage and some of the best grits ever. We're glad Pierson was bored and decided to open his own place — and we're also glad we found it.
