Jeff Lindsay: Dexter Is Delicious

Readers who have been waiting for the newest installment in the Dexter series by novelist Jeff Lindsaywon't be disappointed in the just-released Dexter Is Delicious. Dex is still his delightfully creepy self, a blood-splatter analyst working with the police by day and a coldhearted serial killer by night. While he's coldhearted, he's also thoughtful: Dexter only kills other killers. So far he's managed to keep his double life a secret from everyone. But Dex has just become a father and every time he thinks about his newborn daughter, Lily, his cold heart starts to melt just a little. These newfound human emotions have thrown Dexter off his game, and things get even worse when his brother (also a psychopathic serial killer) shows up and wants to play uncle. As if that weren't enough, the case Dexter is working on involves a group of goths/vampires/cannibals who would very much like to serve Dex up as dinner.

Viewers of the popular television series Dexter who have never read the books will notice lots of little differences. For example, in the book, Dexter has a daughter, and in the television series, he has a son. None of that should change things much. However, there's one thing that might surprise new readers - Dexter's stepchildren are budding weirdos. Seems the emotional damage they suffered at the hands of their father affected them in much the same way Dex’s childhood trauma affected him. When Dexter's brother shows up, the kids think he's fascinating and eagerly want to learn all his tricks. Here's hoping little Lily can stay away from the family legacy.
