Passion: Zarzuelas & Boleros

There is no music more romantic than boleros (slow tempo of Latin love songs), except perhaps zarzuelas (Spanish operettas filled with dance and spoken word). In today's Passion: Zarzuelas & Boleros, the two genres come together. Laurie Hewett, spokesperson for Opera in the Heights, says, "The concert is going to be half zarzuelas and half boleros. One of the most popular zarzuelas is called Luisa Fernanda. We are doing a few songs from that operetta."

The second half of the show will be boleros, which, according to Hewett, are "songs like 'Bésame Mucho,' which means 'kiss me many times,' and 'Perfidia,' which roughly translates to 'big fat liar.'" The performances are at Opera in the Heights theater one night and at Talento Bilingüe de Houston for two nights. "It's a great collaboration," says Hewett.
